Walk and be illuminated at Shinjuku Terrace City

The winter season is alive and kicking in Japan. Though it’s sad that daytime is cut a little shorter, winter in Japan does bring other perks that you won’t want to miss during your travel! Throughout this season, there are plenty of Christmas lights to brighten up the nights. Even in the middle of busy Shinjuku, you can find spots with gorgeous illuminations; a reminder that we need to stop and smell the roses.

Here’s how you can find some amazing lights just around the Odakyu Shinjuku Station. Let’s take a walk!

Magenta hues at Odakyu Department Store

As you walk outside of the Odakyu station, you will see the windows of Odakyu department stores coloured in magenta hues. Sometimes you just need to look up to see the magic!

Twinkling corridor at Mosaic Street

Around the corner from Odakyu Shinjuku Station, you will find a small alleyway called Mosaic Street. There are plenty of boutique stores and cafes, but the main attraction here is the illumination! Twinkling fairy lights form an archway that makes you feel like you’re walking under the stars. It’s hard to miss, as there are always many locals and tourists stopping to take photos at this magical alley.

Christmas trees and smiles at Mosaic Street

Once you’ve walked through the stars, you will find yourself in a soothing place with calming music and smiles all around (mostly from the passersby but also from the actual illuminated smiley faces on the wall). You can stop to take photos, or just to admire the changing colours that make this light display so romantic.

I love how the surrounding area, such as the elevators, are also lit up in the same magenta hues, making the experience even more wholesome.

The gift of Christmas at Southern Terrace

Walking past many shops around Shinjuku towards the south side will eventually lead you to the Southern Terrace. Here, the trees are covered in pink fairy lights, reminding us that Christmas truly is a magical time of the year.

Romantic pathway at Shinjuku Southern Terrace

Continue walking through the Southern Terrace and you will find a romantic spot for more photo opportunities. The pink fairy lights remind us of cherry blossoms, but they have a beauty of their own. Do take time to enjoy this romantic pathway…

There are more areas around Shinjuku where you can quietly admire the beauty of illuminated trees and pathways, so have some fun exploring the area!

It might be cold outside, but these lights are sure to warm your heart.
