Start from Shimo-Kitazawa Station
It costs 7-10 minutes to get to the shimokitazawa station by Odakyu line (local or rapid express) from shinjuk station.
You will see the shopping street as soon as you walk out of the south exit of the shimokitazawa station. There are lots of popular restaurant, clothing shops and drug stores. Then let’s visit the most famous one —— soup curry restaurant named as PONIPIRIC
Soup Curry restaurant in shimokitazawa
Walk from the south exit, you will see the huge signboard in 3 minutes. PONIPIRIC is so popular in shimokitazawa that there are still surging crowds even at noon.
You could find many vintage and cute decorations in the restaurant. Just have a leisure lunch with your friends.
No chemical seasoning is allowed to be used in the soup carry. Actually 18 collected ingredients are used , and cooked with Pig’s bone and chicken’s bone for 12 hours to make the soup tasty. I made the most popular order——baked chicken and vegetable carry, which is rich in vegetables such as carrot, radish, cauliflower, eggplant and lotus root. And this keeps people healthy while enjoying the soup. You can choose the spicy level and how many rice you need.

It is almost afternoon tea time when you finished wandering the grocers and second-hand shops. If you want the Japanese style desert, how about trying the ice store near the north exit of the station. The traditional matcha is waiting for you.
Famous ice shop hiding off street
There is a shop located in the 2 minutes by foot from the north exit named “しもきた茶苑大山”. This is a professional Japanese tea shop opened by a Japanese Tea Master with Judan certification. Except for the first-class tea leaf on the ground floor, there is also delicious ice on the second floor. Because there is not enough seats in the shop, so you have to queue up in the summer. But you can get a number firstly then take a walk around, and come back when your number is called.
The most popular one is “low-sugar matcha shaved ice”. The dense taste makes it so different from other shaved ice. It was not too sweet but still rich and you can add the condensed milk or Molasses as your flavor.
Furthermore, the “baked tea shaved ice” is also in the must-eat list. The aroma of Japanese baked tea will break into your mind quietly with a little sweet in the end. Remember to try the “baked tea and red beans shaved ice” if you like Japanese red beans.

The shop “ANTIQUE LIFE JINⅡ” which is 5 minutes by foot from the north exit is recommended to those loving vintage furniture and leather suitcase. The antique here will beyond your imagination.
A Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki restaurant opened over 30 years
If you want the delicious okonomiyaki, the diversity teppanyaki of the HIROKI is really an eye-opener. HIROKI is a Hiroshima style okonomiyaki restaurant which is opened over 30 years. Not only the Japanese but also the foreigners come for dinner ceaselessly. Maybe because it is one of the restaurants appeared in the drama “Lonely gourmet”.
HIROKI is a restaurant with old-time feeling. You can see how the chief makes the Okonomiyaki if you sit at the counter.
There is usually soba and udon in the Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki, which makes the Okonomiyaki tastier and heavier. Amazing Okonomiyaki with prawn and squid is really decadent. It is a good choice for those who want to taste the local Okonomiyaki in a vintage atmosphere.

Rice ball rolled with meat
This tiny store selling rice ball is popular in shimokitaza. The rice is wrapped in the jellied pork and then grilled straightly in the fire. This how the delicious rice ball was born. It is good to be a desert or bedtime snack.
You can choose take-out or eating at the store although it is a really tiny place. By the way, Mr.Goro have been here to have the rice ball.
Because of the sauced pork, the cute rice ball smells so delicious that you cannot help eating it out. Besides the original flavor , there are other flavors to be chosen such as cheese, pickle and natto, please make sure that you don’t miss the taste you like.
